I ADDED EPIGRAPHS TO MY BOOK. I originally just had quotes from a character from within the chapter. But I was inspired to write new epigraphs after reading Whisperwicks The Labyrinth of Lost and Found by Jordan Lees and illustrated by Vivienne To. I picked it up a few years ago, and it was a huge inspiration! Whisperwicks had epigraphs before each chapter, which were written by an unknown author. Well, it showed their name, but not known to the reader. And I had a beta reader mention that the epigraphs in my book should have been more than just quotes that you eventually read in the chapter.
I TOOK INSPIRATION FROM WHISPERWICKS and created an unknown author of my own, who talks about the events of the chapter, like he’s telling a story. The epigraph sets up what will happen, and the reader sees how events actually unfolded. In some instances, the epigraph written does not align with what actually happens to Rel Rel in the chapter. I leave it up to the reader to assume or figure out why.
I ALSO REWROTE CHAPTER 1 “Nevermore”. It was too passive, with too much info dumping. So I rewrote the chapter, just prior to publishing Adventures of Rel Rel Malidimus Mages. I essentially took chapter 1 of my Wattpad story Rel Life: Social Panic- Chapter 1 Playing Games, and used it as the beginning to the book. I wrote it awhile ago, but I felt like it fit.
I sent it to my editor and hoped she could take a look at it, since she said she could. But I never heard back from her. So I did the best I could to polish the chapter, so hopefully it’s okay with the rest of the novel. I added more scenarios where Rel Rel reacts to the world around her, instead of just telling the reader about the world. I tried to have Rel experience the city of Nevermore and show why she didn’t like the city. I feel like it fits the overall story a lot better.
