And we all keep joking that it’s going to get crazier, even though we’re barely halfway through the year! Maybe it’ll be aliens invading, next? Or a zombie apocalypse? It’s all said jokingly, for the most part. Right? Of course! But…
Chronic Wasting Disease
A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE IS POSSIBLE? Here’s a Tiktok video by @mrballen. He’s someone that I follow and he tells a lot of horror-related content. Check out his channel if you like stories that scare you! Anyways, in this Tiktok video, he tells a story about a deer with Chronic Wasting Disease.

TO SUM UP THE VIDEO a father and son see a deer. It’s going a bit crazy, fighting with something that isn’t there, ramming into a tree, until it’s antler falls off and it tries to eat it? The deer then stands up, like a person, and proceeds to drown itself in the nearby lake. It was infected by something called Chronic Wasting Disease. And according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), it may be possible for it to spread to humans.
I CHECKED THE CDC WEBSITE. You know, to confirm for me if this was indeed something that they have addressed. Here’s some of what is stated on the website:
It may take over a year before an infected animal develops symptoms, which can include drastic weight loss (wasting), stumbling, listlessness, and other neurologic symptoms… To date, there have been no reported cases of CWD infection in people. However, some animal studies suggest CWD poses a risk to certain types of non-human primates, like monkeys, that eat meat from CWD-infected animals or come in contact with brain or body fluids from infected deer or elk. These studies raise concerns that there may also be a risk to people. –Center for Disease Control and Prevention

My Thoughts
FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU TO @mrballen! I love his content, and it’s always a good watch. My thoughts on the situation aren’t about his video, just about the disease in general.
I’D LIKE TO THINK THERE’S NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN. I just thought it was interesting, considering everything going on. It could pass to humans, sure? But unless a huge portion of the population eats diseased deer meat all at once, I don’t see this becoming a global concern. Then again, when I first heard about Covid in China, I never thought it’d spread to our shores the way it did. And here we are. But I will say that, for now, it isn’t a threat. It’s been around since 1960, and I feel like if it was going to become something deadly, it would have a long time ago.
Then again, we are in 2020. So who knows.
PEOPLE DO EAT DEER MEAT. So it is possible for there to be a patient zero that maybe hunts a deer tainted with CWD, eats it, and becomes the first “zombie”. The CDC says that it can be transferred through brain and body fluid, so a bite could also spread the disease? Maybe? I guess the question is if it did spread to the first humans, would there be a cause for any concern? Would a human, or group of humans, with Chronic Wasting Disease, really pose any kind of threat? Or at the very least, become what we all know and understand to be as zombies?
THE DISEASE MAKES THE INFECTED waste away, lose weight, stumble, and zaps energy, on top of making them act erratic. At least in the case of the deer. And if a person acted in the same way, ramming into things, eating their own limbs, and just being crazy in general, it could make for a pretty dangerous situation. But again, with the weight loss and it causing listlessness, I feel like a human with Chronic Wasting Disease wouldn’t have the strength or stamina to run about and chase people. At least, I don’t think so. We’ll see, eh, 2020? I guess they’d be more of the slow, lumbering zombies from Night of the Living Dead?
ON THAT TRAIN OF THOUGHT I just imagined a situation where Covid mutated with Chronic Wasting Disease and began to spread in the same way? That could be terrifying. Or if someone decided to weaponize CWD and it was unleashed on the unsuspecting populace, just like the T-Virus in Resident Evil. But then, we’re getting into video games and fantasy.
